Birthday Bear

Nakia truly is one of the hardest-working musicians around. It doesn’t take much to figure out why; his work is his passion. Music is his life, and he also does more than his part to help out other musicians in the local community through selfless promotion, countless hours of volunteer work, networking and encouragement.

Today, Nakia – a featured singer on “The Voice” on NBC, whose fans include Motown legend Lamont Dozier and super siren Stevie Nicks –  reaches yet another milestone in his life. He’s celebrating his 40th birthday, and what better way to celebrate than with live music? However, he’s kind of taking the night off, and leaving the performing to his friends.

Join Nakia for his gigantic birthday bash tonight at Holy Mountain, 617 E. 7th St. He’s picked the bands himself, and they will not disappoint: Self-proclaimed “billwave” freak pop & cartoon punk quintet Big Bill (who are releasing their new EP The Second Bill), high-volume mighty rock/punk trio Residual Kid (recently signed to Sire Records), and Nakia’s former backing band, fuzzy blues rock groovers Johnson.

Nakia will be covering DJ duties between sets. Be sure to stick around for a plethora of pizza and a special midnight birthday cake countdown. Proceeds from the evening benefit the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. Have a ball and give the birthday boy a big bear hug. So recommended.
