Scuzz It Up

If it already wasn’t glaringly obvious, your Austin Music Minute maven was giddy with glee in Studio 1A this afternoon with The Black Lips. Their latest LP Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art rocks pretty hard, in the best way The Black Lips know how – rough, raw and raunchy. And, as one would imagine, it was an incredible experience creating the album with their producer, Sean Lennon. As guitarist/vocalist Cole Alexander recently explained, the band got to record in Lennon’s ultra-fantastic studio, experiment with different instruments, and work alongside a fellow artist who really gets what The Black Lips is about. The entire album crackles with an irresistible deviant energy, and though it may be tighter than previous Black Lips recordings, it doesn’t lose any of the gritty, scuzzy, badass vibes they bring. It didn’t hurt to have Sean’s mom contributing vocals to “Occidental Front,” either. Whoa.

Don’t miss out on the fun. The Black Lips perform at the Hot Luck Festival‘s kickoff show tonight at Barracuda, 611 E. 7th St. They share the bill with local high-octane punk purveyors (and AMM major music crush) Big Bill, and New York hoodlum punkmeisters Surfbort.

This one comes so recommended it hurts.
