Matt Reilly’s Top Tracks for 2017

Matt Reilly is our KUTX Program Director. Here are his top 5 songs of this year:

1) Black Pistol Fire – Lost Cause

More noise than 2 dudes should be able to make on their own. A big step forward for the Canadian Austinites that are criminally underrated. Criminally I tell ya!

2) Duncan Fellows – Fresh Squeezed

Hidden in this silly little ditty is top notch songcraft and excellent musicianship. Keep your eye on these guys. The kids here in Austin are already hip to them and apparently they’re our future.

3) JD McPherson – Lucky Penny

Comparisons to the Black Keys’ “Gold On The Ceiling” aside, this is just a fuzzed out pleasure to listen to. You can hear McPherson‘s rockabilly roots in here. Combine that with some rock muscle and you won’t be able to keep the volume down.

4) Juana Molina – Cosoco

I’ve been a fan for several years of this Argentinian and she continues to impress. This song is modern, layered and rewarding with repeated listens.

5) Cherry Glazerr – Told You I’d Be With The Guys

I’m a riff guy. This is a great riff and the unhinged quality to this song makes it a little dangerous. Which is nice.
