Susan Castle’s Top Tracks of 2017

Posted by on Dec 1, 2017

Susan Castle is music host 9 a.m.-noon, Monday through Friday. Here are her top 5 songs of the year:

1) Broken Social Scene – Hug of Thunder (ft. Feist)

So much going on…intriguing lyrics…exhilarating crescendos…Feist’s superb vocals intermingled with the cool sonics of the instrumentation…then there’s the harmonies and the curious coda. My favorite song of the year.

2) Alt-J – Deadcrush

The feel of this peculiar song with its odd subject and even odder singing will forever conjure up the strangeness of this year in my perpetually perplexed brain.

3) Big Thief – Shark Smile

Can’t get enough of the fragile emotion in Adrianne Lenker’s voice.

4) Thievery Corporation – Letter to the Editor (ft. Raquel Jones)

A political song that slinks as it stirs.

5) Grizzly Bear – Mourning Sound

Maybe ‘cuz the Brooklyn band recorded some of Painted Ruins in Marfa, but probably because it just gets stuck in my head and I like their sound.
