In 2007, to cover payments on his new family vehicle, Gourds co-founder Kevin Russell started doing a monthly side gig at a Houston club, using the name bestowed upon him by a transient woman he’d once presented with a plate of ribs. With 2015’s Okra Candy, Shinyribs became a band, with drummer/percussionist Keith Langford, keyboardist Winfield Cheek and bassist Jeff Brown. With 2017’s I Got Your Medicine, it’s a party — attended by the Tijuana Train Wreck Horns and the Shiny Soul Sisters. Shinyribs brings that party to The Paramount.

The Vernon, AL native behind “The Dark End of the Street,” “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man,” and “I’m Your Puppet” returns once more to open for the Panhandle legends.

KUTX Live at the Paramount: Ray Wylie Hubbard

Whether or not you subscribe to the adage that the devil always has the best music, you can take it on faith that anytime he pops up for a cameo in a Ray Wylie Hubbard song, the results are gonna be pretty damned entertaining. And as any fan of the Hubbard canon knows, Old Scratch pops up in his songs a lot — nearly as often as all of Hubbard’s wise-cracking blackbirds, lyrical and musical nods to Lightnin’ Hopkins, bad-ass women (usually Hubbard’s own wife, Judy), and a myriad of other grifters, ruffians, and scrappy cats of the gnarly and general lowdown variety.

The renowned songwriter and visual artist from Lubbock has a whole lot of classic albums to draw from (and a whole lot of talented friends to join him onstage).
