Jody Denberg’s Top Tracks of 2017

Jody Denberg is music host Monday through Thursday 5 – 7 p.m. and Friday 12 – 4 p.m. Here are his top 5 songs of the year:

1) This Is The Kit – Moonshine Freeze

Kate Stables is essentially This Is The Kit. They’ve been around about 10 years and this is their 4th album, but the first I’ve heard. Magic.

2) Gurf Morlix – Deeper Down

Austin’s Gurf Morlix is perhaps best known as producer for the likes of Lucinda, Slaid Cleaves, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Robert Earl Keen and countless others, but all the while he has been releasing strong solo albums. This song this is from The Soul & The Heal but any song on it could have made my year-end list.

3) Matthew Logan Vasquez – Same

Before “Same,” nothing from this leader of Delta Spirit (including his previous solo release), prepares one for the kitchen-sink merriment of this track. Unique.

4) Big Thief – Mythological Beauty

Two albums in two years from this NYC based band led by Adrianne Lenker reveal this outfit to be simply brilliant.

5) Stephen Doster – Shooting For The Stars

40 years ago Stephen Doster was the first Austin artist I heard on the local airwaves; 40 years later his album New Black Suit is the one I listened to the most in 2017.
