KUTX Presents…

MapJam 2014

Saturday, February 15, 2014

MapJam is a daylong music festival that brings the Austin Music Map to life. The second annual MapJam will showcase some of the hidden musical spaces in one of the most exciting cities in the world.

This year, eight bands — from Afrobeat and bluegrass, to hip hop and pop punk — will perform in five locations across East Austin from noon to midnight. MapJam is free and open to the public. This is an all-ages event.

We’ll be documenting the festival throughout the day. You can help us by taking pictures, recording sound, and tagging your media #austinmusicmap to add it to our  interactive website.

Biking and walking is encouraged! Please avoid clogging up streets and be respectful of surrounding neighborhoods. Pay attention to city signage and do not block driveways.

THE CARPER FAMILY – 12 – 1PM  @ HOPS & GRAIN – The Carper Family is a family band like no other, spinning out the effortless harmonies of a born-family with the range and diversity of a made-family. The Austin-based trio of Melissa Carper [upright bass], Beth Chrisman [fiddle], and Jenn Miori [guitar] applies their signature, stunning three-part harmonies to bluegrass, old-time, country and swing tunes of the standard and original variety, pushing and honoring American musical traditions at every step.

LATASHA LEE & THE BLACKTIES - 1:30 – 2:30PM @ TILLERY PARK - Latasha Lee is a singer-songwriter from Corpus Christi, Texas with a gritty, soulful, classic sound, that transports you back to the days when many of your favorite artists thrived. Incorporating her influences of the past, such as Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Etta James and more, Latasha looks to stay true to the sound she loves, while expanding on it with her own experiences.

GROWL – 3 – 4PM @ DELTA MILLWORKS - GROWL is a band making solid indie rock that harkens back to indie’s infancy; the days of round-wound guitars, ride cymbals, shaggy haired dudes with no style or money or girlfriends, just a hard line on how to make a good tune.

HARD PROOF – 4:30PM – 5:30PM @ PAN AM PARK - Locally produced and internationally-inspired, Hard Proof is an Austin-based collective that brings intense Afrobeats to the state of Texas. Hard Proof tightly fuses sounds from sub-Saharan Africa with adventurous jazz and deep funk to stimulate your brain and move your feet. Members of Hard Proof also perform with bands such as Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, Ocote Soul Sounds, Echocentrics, The Calm Blue Sea and Cougar.

MONEY CHICHA – 5:45 – 7PM @ PAN AM PARK - Money Chicha is Austin’s first chicha group, incorporating the psychedelic sounds of guitars, fuzz, and reverb with heavy percussion, cumbia rythyms and the melodies of Columbia and Peru. The music is an homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s that was known as chicha. Members of Money Chicha also perform with Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds, Echocentrics and others.

URBAN ACHIEVERS BRASS BAND - 7:30 – 8:30PM @ SCOOT INN - For almost two years now, Urban Achievers Brass Band has been winning over diverse crowds with their unique mix of traditional and contemporary New Orleans brass band music, fused with ten-gallon Texas sensibilities, and an ever-increasing selection of original tunes and creative arrangements of early 90′s radio hits.

MAGNA CARDA – 8:45 – 9:45PM @ SCOOT INN - Magna Carda is a hip-hop band residing in Austin, TX. Megz Kelli raps, Dougie Do produces/provides the beats/keys, Eric Nikolaides – the Greek guitar god, Derek Van Wagner – the smooth bass, and Zach Stover – the king of the drums.

BODY ROCK ATX- 10PM – 12AM @ SCOOT INN - Body Rock is a party/jam with your hosts Riders Against the Storm (RAS) rocking the mic and dance floor. DJ Chorizo Funk keeps hip hop, funk, soul, reggae, dancehall, new jack swing, latin, etc. in HEAVY rotation. Feel the vibe!
