If you’re a long-time Austinite or even just a Texas music connoisseur, Butch Hancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore are two names that undoubtedly need no introduction. For the uninitiated, Hancock and Gilmore constitute two-thirds of the Lubbock-born “outlaw country” band, The Flatlanders. After actualizing with third member Joe Ely, The Flatlanders had an all-too-brief stint of playing a progressive mix of country-rock together in the 1970s.
The Flatlanders recorded a single official album – released only on 8-track – to show for their now-mythical 70s collaborative years, though they gradually became a thing of legend. The upside to the band’s diffusion is that Hancock, Gilmore and Ely are now established as some of the greatest solo songwriters in Texas.
