JD McPherson 10.19.17

JD McPherson is a wicked smart renaissance man, a cool cat with a red hot guitar and a penchant for Americana. Originally from Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, McPherson was introduced to blues and jazz at an early age; as he got older he discovered Led Zeppelin, punk-rock, Buddy Holly and just about every major modern influence under the sun. After spending time at his family’s cattle ranch McPherson moved to Tulsa for college. His focus was experimental film, but he was also painting, sculpting, doing card tricks and, most importantly, playing music. It was during his time with roots-ensemble the Starkweather Boys that he caught the ear of Chicago producer Jimmy Sutton, who helped McPherson release his debut solo record in 2010. The album was mostly 40’s B&B and 50’s rock n’ roll but it was inspired by everything from Wu Tang Clan to The Smiths; it is a veritable melting pot of musical influences. The intervening years have seen McPherson honing his unique sound and building up a loyal fan base. His latest release, Undivided Heart & Soul, continues this seamless blending of old and new, primal and sophisticated. A solid R&B/rock n’ roll record that manages to avoid that dusty, time-capsule feel. JD McPherson stopped past Studio 1A ahead of his show at The Historic Scoot Inn. Missed the session?
