Lake Street Dive 6.25.16

The messy bun, the man bun, the top bun – the list goes on and on. In a decade of obvious bun favoritism, Lake Street Dive is speaking out and offering a radical alternative: the side pony (think less red carpet and more Napoleon Dynamite).

“Against everything square and I’m sightly. Yes I know I look good so don’t fine me. All I need is a clip or scrunchy and then I’m ready.”

Lucky for you this new hairstyle revolution comes with an anthem. Released back in February on Nonesuch Records  (Lianne La Havas, Joni Mitchell, The Black Keys), Side Pony is Lake Street Dive’s fifth full-length album and it’s every bit as bold and confident as the proposed hairstyle. Rachael Price’s soulful vocals bring the unwavering strength of Florence Welch and an energy reminiscent of some of the most memorable women in jazz. Meanwhile, bassist Bridget Kearney jams out on the upright bass with unparalleled personality. It’s the charisma of retro Motown, the power of old-school soul, the technique of classic jazz, and the appeal of modern day pop.

Lake Street Dive stopped by Studio1A last Saturday to perform for a small studio audience. Listen to the performance down below featuring a stellar cover of Lola by the Kinks.
