Matt Read and Chris McQueen 3.6.17

It’s always exciting when virtuoso musicians come together to make an album. The music tends to be clever, sometimes even funny, and of course, incredibly well played. The new album, Western Theatre, from Matt Read and Chris McQueen is no different. These two guitarists are a new kind of Austin musician. Both born and raised here in town, both went off to some of the most prestigious music schools to study Jazz, and both returned home to put down roots. You might recognize Matt Read from his dazzling solo acoustic work or from his band First Year on Earth, and Chris McQueen can be seen playing with his rock group Foe Destroyer and three-time Grammy-winning jazz supergroup Snarky Puppy. In their first collaboration, they take all of their experiences in the jazz and rock worlds and combine them with their Central Texas roots to create an album of tightly constructed and improvisation laden songs with a heavy western tinge. Matt and Chris stopped by Studio 1A to show us some tracks from the album, and it was really, really cool.
