Monolith 2.16.16

Justin Sherburn is a composer, producer, and musical director based here in Austin, Texas. Sherburn has composed for television, theatre, film, and dance performances, shared the stage with Willie Nelson, Roky Erickson, Brian Setzer and Wilco, appeared on David Letterman, Conan, and Jimmy Fallon television shows, and played at festivals around the globe including Coachella in California, Primavera Sound in Barcelona, to the Laneway Festival in Australia.

Sherburn and his Montopolis Chamber Ensemble latest project “Monolith” is inspired by the Central Texas landmark known as Enchanted Rock. “Monolith” is a uniquely Texan approach to ambient modern classical music. With compositions for string trio, pedal steel, and piano, Sherburn summons visions of the Southwestern landscape–each piece moving at a glacial pace, and covered in blankets of mutating harmonies. Like Brian Eno’s Discreet Music if it were composed beneath a sublime Central Texas landscape.

“Monolith”premiers at the North Door on February 28th at 7pm, featuring a projected photo essay by photographer Leon Alessi and hydrogeologist Rebecca Smyth. And check out their Studio 1A session at the bottom of the page with Justin Sherburn on piano, Brian Cassidy on pedal steel, Sara Nelson on cello, Leah Nelson on Viola, and Leigh Mahoney on violin.
