My KUTX: Atlas Maior

Photo by Alicia Michelle. Joshua Peters (L) and Joshua Thomson (R) are the guest DJs.

Atlas Maior’s music is a meeting place between a lot of different cultures and sounds. Listening to Riptide, the Austin band’s fifth album, you can hear Middle Eastern, Latin American, and jazz traditions all swirling together, often in the same song. The group is also part of a global music community, touring Europe frequently and collaborating with local guests from across the musical spectrum. On June 28, Atlas Maior plays at the Sahara Lounge with world music ensemble Atash.

This week on My KUTX, saxophone player Joshua Thomson and oud player Joshua Peters play an hour of Atlas Maior’s many influences, from free jazz maestro Sun Ra to Turkish psychedelic rock and beyond. Hear Atlas Maior’s My KUTX on Saturday, June 22 at 6 p.m. or listen at any time below.
