Cilantro Boombox: “Fears Away”

Felix Pacheco wears many hats. The producer/bassist/DJ is a musical sponge, soaking up hip-hop, electronica, and traditional Venezuelan sounds. In 2010, he teamed up with Joe Woullard on a one-off track. Woullard brought his years of experience playing saxophone and flute for the likes of Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Hard Proof Afrobeat, and Ocote Soul Sounds. It was a match made in musical heaven.

That initial collaboration soon blossomed into a productive partnership. Under the name Cilantro Boombox, the duo has ballooned into a band eight instruments strong, featuring musical guests like Frank Orral (Poi Dog Pondering, Thievery Corporation). Just in time for summer (and our own SummerJam), Cilantro Boombox has dropped a brand-new single. “Fears Away” is a perfect introduction to the group’s mash of styles: reggae, rap, jazz, and salsa all collide in a song that begs to be heard in the sunny Texas heat.

Catch Cilantro Boombox tomorrow at SummerJam at the ABGB. They’ll take the stage at 4 pm with special guest Gina Chavez.
