Red Baraat: “Bhangale” (feat. Delicate Steve)

Red Baraat is an eight-piece band from Brooklyn that takes its name from a type of Indian wedding procession, and fittingly, this group is a full-on celebration. Drummer and bandleader Sunny Jain has played with Norah Jones, Peter Gabriel, and Q-Tip, and Red Baraat is just as far-reaching. The group pulls from Northern India bhangra and Sri Lankan music as well as funk and jazz. You can also hear the tongue-twisting bols on “Bhangale,” which are mnemonic sounds that spell out the rhythm. But the great thing is you don’t need to know any of this. “Bhangale” is simply a party-starting jam, rhythmically complex and beautifully ecstatic.

“Bhangale” appears on Bhangra Pirates, out now. Red Baraat plays at the Mohawk on Wednesday, April 26 with Dengue Fever and Hard Proof.
