Sam Morrow: “Barely Holding On”

Like Jason Isbell, Sam Morrow chased out his demons with an album of stark ruminations on getting sober. Last year’s Ephemeral lives up to its name: the L.A. singer sounds barely there on the album, the songs more burdensome than healing.

For There Is No Map, out September 18, Morrow dives back into those demons but with wilder results. “I’m a new-school outlaw / Break all the rules and I don’t leave the house at all,” he sings on the rambling “Barely Holding On,” affecting a Dylan-like sneer. He doesn’t pretend like the drugs weren’t fun, but the harsh reality is standing on the other side of the chorus: “I hope the wind don’t pick up too much / I’m barely holding on.” Download the song below.
