Alash Ensemble @ KUTX 10.9.14

Heritage is everything to Alash Ensemble, a throat singing trio from Central Asian republic of Tuva. While grounding themselves within the nomadic tradition of throat singing, Alash also draws from Western influences like Jimi Hendrix and Sun Ra. Since first visiting the United States in 2006, Alash Ensemble has collaborated with a diverse array of artists including Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and the Sun Ra Arkestra. But instead of pursuing a Western sound better suited for American listeners, the members of Alash seek out contemporary ideas that mesh with the sound and feel of traditional Tuvan music. Always experimenting with new harmonies, instruments, and song structures, Alash Ensemble creates an intriguing mixture of old and new, and of East and West.
