Mother Falcon is a whole lot of friends having a whole lot of fun and making some great music while they do it. The ambitious, symphonic rock group formed in 2008 as an off shoot of the Red Armada String Quartet; a Westlake High School orchestra. Before long the after school jam sessions grew to include students from neighboring high schools and the ensemble, at times twenty-two members strong, began playing gigs around town and had been featured in the Austin Chronicle. Headed by cellist Nick Gregg, the group is named after a misheard TV-dubbing of Die Hard (“Yippee-ki-ay Mother Falcon!”), and embodies the same orchestral-pop leanings as artists like Sufjan Stevens and Beirut. Their sound is categorized by blazing strings, driving accordion and strong vocal harmonies; it is thick and precise.
