Take country, bluegrass, folk, funk, zydeco, and Cajun—mix it all together, and you get: the Gourds. Since the band started in Austin in 1994, their ten albums have won praise from critics all around the country, but their studio work hasn’t quite captured the excitement of a Gourds live show. In 2013, the band announced a hiatus, and frontman Kevin Russell has continued to wow audiences under the banner of Shinyribs. There’s no telling when—or if—the Gourds will get back together, so today, we’re presenting them at the peak of their powers. The Gourds, caught live in 2009 from the historic soundstage of Austin City Limits, on the Austin Music Experience. Join us Friday at noon and again at 11pm on KUTX 98.9, or anytime in the player below.
