It all began at the age of 5 for Datri Bean, when her mother inherited an upright piano from their neighbors. Young Datri started playing and never looked back. And now, the multi-talented multi-instrumentalist Bean gives us fresh and fabulous original songs with a gorgeous, old-time jazz feel. As a matter of fact, she’s dubbed her style “Southern-fried vintage folk-jazz,” a perfect match for her alluring vocals and an irresistible vulnerability in her songwriting.
Chances are you may have seen Bean leading her other project, the magnificent Minor Mishap Marching Band, ’round the Austin neighborhoods. She’s a wonderful performer, and it would do you good to see her tonight at The Sahara Lounge, 1413 Webberville Rd. Bean’s starting a Monday night residency there this month (with the exception of February 16th, when Bean will be in New Orleans for Lundi Gras). She goes on at 8 p.m., followed by the fantastic Jonathan Doyle Quintet at 9:30 p.m.
It’s a night of tunes to make you swoon. Get there early to see both performances. Highly recommended.
