Analog Love

Perhaps your Austin Music Minute maven may be a geek for even saying this, but let the geek flag fly high. It was fascinating to hear of Royal Forest‘s adventures in sound beyond the confines of a recording studio. Not every band takes the time to venture out to capture the ambiance of a lightning storm, the sound textures within a WWII submarine, or whatever one would find sonically inside single prop airplane flying above the Hill Country.

Their latest album, Spillway, offers an intriguing combination of psych-pop and Americana that is further proof of their penchant for musical experimentation. Their manipulation of analog tape loops and field recordings in both their album and their live performances adds to beautiful surreal quality of their sound.

Spillway is now available on vinyl – clear vinyl, to be specific, which is quite stunning, and Royal Forest is celebrating with a vinyl release show tonight at Holy Mountain, 617 E. 7th St. It’s another killer line-up of local bands, including Tiger Waves, Frank Smith and Your Friendly Ghost. The music starts after 9 p.m. Recommended.
