Bad Boy Croy

It doesn’t take much to figure out that songwriter Corey Baum doesn’t dish out any bull. Period. Naturally, if there were such a thing as the Austin Music Minute Grand List of Badasses, Baum would be in the highest of ranks.

The Austin-based artist grew up in Bowling Green, OH, and would be the first to tell you that he didn’t venture far beyond the city limits until he reached his mid-20’s. He didn’t know what the hell he was doing, or where he was going, but he knew he could write about the journey. It just felt natural putting together Croy and The Boys, after relocating to Austin. Although Baum may technically not be a native Texan (he readily admits it with a sheepish grin), there’s a Texas boy coming through loud and clear. It’s music with country-western roots and a refreshing, candid, unapologetic swagger.

Baum is kicking off a Tuesday night Bad Boy Croy residency tomorrow night at Threadgill’s Old No. 1, 6416 N. Lamar Blvd. Each Tuesday this month, the solo Croy Boy delivers some great “guitar picking and illegal smiles” aplenty. The music starts early at 7 p.m.

Of course this one’s recommended.
