It was in 2006 that your Austin Music Minute maven wandered into some sparkling galactic forest rock and fell head over heels for Golden Bear. Their self-titled debut and 2007 follow-up To the Farthest Star are genuine pop treasures with fantastic tales and euphoric melodies . Countless times, I’ve declared that Golden Bear makes me smile. It comes rather easily when it’s music that’s so naturally euphoric.
A bit of time (a hibernation, you could say, bear-wise) has passed since the vibrant Alive came out in 2011, so it’s good to know that new music is on the way from the forthcoming Heartdancer. Word on the street is that fans can expect something “sweatier, grimier and funkier.” If the track featured on today’s AMM, “Let My Love Come Down,” is any indication, we’re in for some more fantastic galactic artistry.
Golden Bear will share some new tunes at their show tonight at Frank, 407 Colorado. It’s a pretty good bill with Abram Shook‘s (The Laughing) music project Sun Marquee, and reckless alt.-country/neurotic pop-rock goddess Pink Nasty. All good. Doors open at 9 p.m. Recommended.
