Higher Rock Plane

Your Austin Music Minute maven takes immense pleasure in seemingly contrasting/contradictory ideas, shapes, shades, styles, or what-have-you combining together to create some badass magic. That…is winning. Taking that into consideration, Thurston Moore is winning with his fifth solo recording, Rock N Roll Consciousness. It feels like the ultimate consciousness; taking something as vigorous and explosive as the guitar-rocking you hear on this lengthy 5-track release, and using it to communicate elevated moments of bliss, rapture, mystique.

Rock N Roll Consciousness reveals a more concise, cohesive side to Moore’s songwriting. He’s still running like a crazy man all over the map, but with a more strategic flow. So, all at once, you have Moore unleashing a stream of cosmic, trippy mythological references while igniting the vibe with tremendous, soaring guitars building up the sound.

Experience it for yourself. The Thurston Moore Group performs tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, on the outdoor stage. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and Houston-based avant-garde duo Charalambides opens the show. Then, stick around for more awesomeness on the inside stage with Austin band Basketball Shorts at 10 p.m.

So recommended it hurts.
