Perhaps the go-to description of Perfume Genius‘ latest release, No Shape, might be “experimental,” but that’s hardly scratching the surface. Songwriter Mike Hadreas is creating upon more than a jaunt into avant-garde flourishes. While the album certainly progresses with an experimental dynamic to it, Hadreas finds his greatest euphoria moving within several different sonic energies, or the myriad of scintillating sounds, noises, pulses and patterns going into his creations. It’s multi-layered and complicated, very much like Handreas’ personal journey of the self.
