Oh, Just Hangin’

The Blowies’ new album Playing With Ourselves helps us laugh…to keep us from crying.

AMM Oct. 24 2024

The Blowies’ album release show tonight at Chess Club, with Tough on Fridays, and Penner.

Today’s AMM-featured track is a tasty slice of subversion. As Sofia Petrillo might tell you, picture it: It’s January 6, 2021. You’re hiding in a bunker. And who should sidle up next to you but this white-haired guy who looks a lot like the former VP – and he’s up for a chat. “Hangin’ With Mike Pence” is not the first time Tucker Jameson and Samuel Thompson – the dynamic duo crashing your ears as The Blowies – have indulged in facetious hilarity, but the timing on this one is crucial.

The Blowies’ new LP Playing With Ourselves, out tomorrow, takes on the current climate of hateful lambasting and willful ignorance – fueled by complacency, social media, and political collusion – with a little thing called a sense of humor. Not to mention a sense of the absurd, two things that may help keep us sane. Jameson and Thompson call out the ridiculousness in perfect doses of no-B.S. punk.

“It isn’t enough to complain, but acceptance won’t solve anything either,” say Jameson and Thompson. “We’re releasing this album into the world at a pretty heightened time on purpose; we don’t expect it to change anything or anyone’s mind, but at least it can help us laugh to keep from crying – who knows? Maybe Mike Pence will relate.”

Maybe he should, you know, buy the new album? Join The Blowies for their release show tonight at Chess Club, 617 Red River. Doors at 9 p.m., and the line-up includes rock/post-rock grunge trio Tough on Fridays, and alt. pop-punk outfit Penner.
