Pointy Boots

Today, the AMM shares the tale of the badass Evel Knievel maneuvers of one Austin band bringing the heat in a bar not quite built for venue shows. The thrills! The excitement! The fact that no one fell over and broke any bones is impressive…

The last time Sailor Poon played a live show was about a year and a half ago, at East Austin fave 13th Floor – a space roughly the size of a long and narrow walk-in closet. Or a saltine box. Either way, there’s no stage, and even acoustic acts are obliged to squeeze into a corner by the door to play.

Sailor Poon is no acoustic act. The drums were placed on top of the bar, and the rest of the band stood on their amps. Vocalist/saxophonist Billie Buck slayed the room, while narrowly avoiding stepping on people as they ordered their drinks. Killer music and a chaotic atmosphere – the perfect night for Sailor Poon.

Cut to now, and we find the band ready to return to the stage – or, at the very least, a place with more room to get crazy. Sailor Poon celebrates the release of Sailor Poon’s First Album (“Pointy Boots” is featured on today’s AMM) with a show this Saturday, August 28, in the parking lot at Kinda Tropical, 3501 E. 7th St. DJ Teenage Cavegirl spins starting at 8 p.m., followed by Sailor Poon’s set at 9 p.m.

The band asks that you come masked and vaxxed. Thank you.
