Portmanteau

Today’s Austin Music Minute spotlight is on Lawrence, KS band Westerners, whose AMM-featured track “Portmanteau” is on their forthcoming album Recurring Dream Theme, due for release July 14th.  Their brand of self-described “garage-a-delic” rock draws you in toward multiple layers of folk-tinged elements, addictive pop, and darker psych-rock grit – kind of leaping all over the place, stylistically, but connecting effortlessly. And between bandmates/childhood friends Mitchell Hewlett and Josh Hartranft, there’s a mesh of East Coast roots and Midwestern sensibilities at the foundation.

Westerners are in town for a show tonight at Cheer Up Charlie’s, 901 Red River, on an excellent bill with local bands (and AMM faves) Ancient River and The Sour Notes. The music starts at 10 p.m., then stick around for late-night slow-n-loud madness with The Teddys at 12:30 a.m. So recommended.
