Post-Rock Bliss

You will undoubtedly hear your humble Austin Music Minute maven hammer this point home over and over again, but it’s important: Nothing beats the energy, the intensity, of a live musical performance. It brings to life all the wicked-awesome tunes you’ve been playing in your headphones or the car stereo, while singing along at the top of your lungs. No matter what your favorite style is, experiencing the immediacy of your favorite music being performed live, right in front of you, produces a soaring natural high that makes it all the more exciting. This is something Equals is definitely at the top of the list for.

Members of the local post-rock quintet started out playing together in different projects that were all quite diverse in scope, but a connection was made. They began to fine-tune their approach collectively into a more tightly arranged instrumental style using those diverse multi-layered sounds. It’s well-crafted, cohesive, cinematic music that also leaves plenty of room for the band to improvise, which is what they do quite well. It feels seamless, and it’s amazing to behold.

Equals is on the bill tonight at the Mohawk, 912 Red River, opening for Long Island hardcore hoodlums Glassjaw. Also opening is local experimental noise-pop quartet Boyfrndz. This is one hell of a bill. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the music starts at 8 p.m. on the outdoor stage. So very recommended, because it will all blow you away.
