RAS Day

It was made official on August 29, 2013. The City of Austin proclaimed it Riders Against the Storm Day. But for the three-time Austin Chronicle Band of the Year award-winning hip-hop duo, their special day was about something more than recognition. Husband and wife Chaka and Qi Dada put the focus on giving back to the community with an annual celebration.

Each year, RAS Day brings together a diverse and eclectic array of local businesses, community organizations and artists for a day-long family-friendly festival. Of course, there’s an abundance of fantastic live music, and this year’s line-up is outstanding: Special guest The Sun Ra Arkestra, plus performances by Riders Against the Storm, SIP SIP, Mobley, Tameca Jones, Kalu James, Afrofreque, and Zoumountchi.

Head out to Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, 1106 E. 11th St. this afternoon. Gates open at 3 p.m., and the day starts out with yoga, hoola-hooping, a fabulous twerk and burn workout, and loads of activities for kids. The live music starts at around 5 p.m. Children under 12 get in free.

You need to move, and keeping on movin’. Very recommended!
