Rival Island

There’s a list of musicians your humble Austin Music Minute host befriended back in the one-station KUT 90.5 days, not too long after moving from El Paso to the Live Music Capital. Matthew Grusha and Russell Karloff would be at the top of said list.

The founding members of She Sir (and Iowa transplants) were also fairly new to Austin, and it was instant AMM love for their self-released shoegaze gem Who Can’t Say Yes (2006 EP, rereleased as an LP last summer).

Karloff and Grusha met in college, and have been creating music together for more than 15 years, eventually under the moniker She Sir. Years later, there are darker shades and driven rhythms pulsating on their most recent release, Rival Island, pushing beyond their shoegaze roots into a wider aesthetic brimming with lush arrangements.

Don’t miss She Sir’s performance tonight at a free show at Barracuda, 611 E. 7th, with a line-up including Fanclub, and Wildfires. Doors at 9 p.m. Recommended.
