Spirits Inside, All Rockin’ Out

It is alive and well in our fair city. Really, it always has been. Psych rock never truly left. The roots here in Texas are particularly deep. Of course, you already know the bands I’m tossing off the top of my head:  13th Floor Elevators, Vulcan Gas Company, Shiva’s Headband, as a few standouts. Psych might have experienced a dormancy period, but dang, it returned with a vengeance, slightly reshaped by today’s artists from a modern standpoint but remaining true to the original ragas and drones for the most part.

More bands are on the local roster for me to brag about, including The Wolf, although more toward the garage-rock end of the spectrum. These psych bandidos from hell work the classic vibes on their recent four-song EP Part 1, the follow-up to their self-titled EP from last year.

Here is the show to rock out to. The Wolf is playing Thursday night at one of their favorite haunts, Hotel Vegas, 1500 E. 6th St. And it looks as though the whole gang of usual suspects is on the bill to complete the party: La Migra, Low Times, Smoking White and Octopus-Rex, with DJ Krunchy Krystals spinning between sets. Doors open at 8 p.m.

Sounds like rock to me. Time to get rowdy. Recommended.
