Just for you, here’s a love song. There’s no stopping The Damned.
They’re revered by punks, goths, rockers, the whole lot and beyond. Formed in 1976, The Damned became an extraordinary presence in England’s underground scene, often regarded as one of the first gothic bands but ultimately unleashing their own brand of punk chaos, dark psychedelia and unremitting energy voicing their discontent with gloriously unnerving noise. As in, smash it up and take no prisoners. Scandalous and maddening – as it should be.
Their influence is felt within the gothic subculture worldwide to this day. Vocalist Dave Vanian’s evolving vampiric style may have had some role in that, from his fashion sense to his personal tastes in horror and the macabre in art, film and literature.
If you’re new to The Damned and about to dive into their catalogue, the AMM recommends two essentials: Machine Gun Etiquette and Phantasmagoria. This will get you ready for the show tomorrow night at Radio East, with TV Smith’s The Adverts opening. Doors at 7 p.m.
