BoomBaptist is an Austin DJ, producer, record label owner, and one half of the electro-funk duo the Vapor Caves. Across his many creative outlets, hip-hop, funk, and electronic music all converge, tapping into the same family tree that birthed Pete Rock, J Dilla, and more. BoomBaptist’s physical releases are just flat-out fun: he’s made Rick James figurines; designed an album to look like a box of Krispy Kreme donuts; and released an album based around the ’90s arcade classic NBA Jam, complete with a chunky, Nintendo-esque game cartridge aesthetic.
This week on My KUTX, BoomBaptist is our guest DJ, and he’s got something different in store than our usual DJ sets. He crafts a seamless, hour-long mix of his inspirations. In BoomBaptist’s world, Venezuelan vocal music slams into ’60s garage rock, funk samples are excavated out of ’90s rap hits, and the party rages all night long.
