Ed Hamell has put in the miles as a musician. His long-running outfit Hamell On Trial–which just features him on acoustic guitar, gloriously blending up punk, folk, and blues into his own genre-less sound–has toured the world and released seventeen albums. And for much of that time, Hamell has taken his son Detroit along with him. His exploits of fatherhood and touring is now the subject of his third one-man theatrical show called Driving All Night: How to Raise a Kid and Survive as a Broke-ass Musician. Featuring Hamell’s hilarious storytelling, music, and visuals, the production runs at Austin’s Hyde Park Theatre, September 19-21.
This week on My KUTX, Hamell is our guest DJ. He plays a mix of songs that remind him of fatherhood, ranging from the pop hits that his son introduced to him on long car rides to the classics that Hamell introduced to his son in return.
