For years, Meg Duffy was an incredibly skilled guitarist-for-hire, subtly shading Kevin Morby’s folk-rock excursions or ripping a widescreen slide solo for the War On Drugs. 2017 saw Duffy’s first release under the name Hand Habits, but this year’s placeholder has earned them more of a starring role. Buoyed by the atmospheric “Can’t Calm Down,” the album is quietly intense, finding space for both Duffy’s intimate, spare singing style and spiky guitar leads.
This week on My KUTX, Duffy takes some time out from a long national tour to play guest DJ, spinning an hour of influences that range from ’70s singer-songwriters and glam rock to inspiration from Duffy’s L.A. home. Hear Hand Habits’ My KUTX on Saturday, May 25 at 6 p.m. or listen anytime below. Hand Habits returns to Austin for a two-night stand opening for Whitney at the Mohawk on September 13 and 14.
