A few years ago, Austin’s Cross Record (and KUTX Artist of the Month alumni) opened for local art-rock veterans Shearwater on an international tour. Fast-forward to now, and the two bands have combined forces. Loma features Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater and Cross Record’s Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski, and their self-titled debut is out now via Sub Pop. The album–recorded at Cross Record’s Dripping Springs-based studio–is an entrancing mix of these musicians’ sensibilities, ambient and meditative in places while still retaining a nervy core. You can see for yourself when Loma comes back to town for a show at the North Door on Saturday, April 21.
This week on My KUTX, Emily, Dan, and Jonathan take the controls for a collaborative guest DJ set. They play an hour of songs and sounds that influenced Loma, covering everything from creepy film soundtracks and children’s music to electronic psychedelia and doo wop. Hear Loma’s My KUTX on Saturday, April 7, 6 to 7 p.m., or listen anytime at the bottom of the page.
