My KUTX: Mamahawk

Mamahawk’s music is fun and packed with pop precision. Listen to a few moments of “Brain Invaderz,” and you’ll recognize how much the Austin band revels in sonic details: a harmony here, a synth melody there, just when you’re least expecting it.

But Mamahawk’s members also understand how music can serve as an emotion-filled benchmark. “We haven’t known each other for a long, long time,” says Brennan Howell, Mamahawk’s drummer. “But when we were picking these songs [for the band’s My KUTX], we realized we have a lot of similar taste in music. It was really fun for us to go back and kinda talk about when this music first came out and we were listening to it, kinda comparing where we were and what we were doing in our lives.”

This week on My KUTX, Brennan joins singer/guitarist James Reed and keyboardist/singer Adam Littman for an influence-filled guest DJ set. Get to know Mamahawk on Saturday, August 25, 6 to 7 p.m., or listen anytime at the bottom of the page. You can also catch the band at the Swan Dive for its September residency.
