Marmalakes is the KUTX Artist of the Month for May. L to R: Taft Mashburn, Chase Weinacht, Josh Halpern, Sam Pankey. Photo by Julia Reihs/KUTX.
Chase Weinacht and Josh Halpern formed Austin’s Marmalakes nearly a decade ago, and on the band’s new album, Please Don’t Stop, all those touring miles and sweaty shows are bearing fruit. Recorded at the Echo Lab outside of Denton with Centro-matic’s Matt Pence, the record is a great approximation of Marmalakes’ feverish live sets: tuneful, wistful folk-pop mixed with cathartic rock and roll.
For Marmalakes’ My KUTX playlist, Weinacht and Halpern lean more to the wistful side of things, showing how everything from Buddy Holly, Frank Ocean, and their fellow Austin musicians have influenced this rising band. Hear Marmalakes’ My KUTX on Saturday, May 12 from 6 to 7 p.m., or listen anytime at the bottom of the page.
