5 Questions with Kevin Connor

Five Questions With …. Kevin Connor

1. What artist/album/musical experience most set you on a career in radio?
When we were little kids, my Mom would tell us stories about working in radio in Boston in the late ’40’s. It sounded fascinating and fun. When we were 11 and 10, my brother and I would do our own pretend radio shows with a small, portable reel-to-reel recorder and crack ourselves up listening to the playback. Listening to The Big Mattress with Charles Laquidara on WBCN was fun growin’ up. College radio on WLUR was fun. So it’s not an album or artist that interested me in radio. It’s radio itself.

2. What’s your favorite Austin music experience so far? (this could be a concert, in-studio performance, interview, local music venue, etc.)
There are so many after more than 30 years in this town, but the night Willie Nelson and friends came down and did the entire “Spirit” album live on the radio was pretty cool. Literal surround sound.

3. Most prized artist in your personal music collection and why?
This question makes me think of a fastidious collector pulling some rare, autographed vinyl out from its protective glass case. I’m not that organized. But there’s lots of songs that mean a lot to me.

4. Why public rather than commercial radio?
That’s like when they asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks: “It’s where the money is.” For the most part, public stations nowadays are where the good records are. And where you get to play them.

5. What do you like to do when you’re not spinning records on the air?
Spin ’em off the air. And trample through the woods with my dog, Gracie. And daydream.
