George “Little Hat” Jones

This Week in Texas Music History, we’ll meet “the other George Jones” of Texas music.

On June 15, 1929, George “Little Hat” Jones first recorded in San Antonio. Jones was  born in Bowie County, Texas, in 1899. He left home at an early age and worked as a manual laborer while learning to play the guitar. He earned the nickname “Little Hat,” because he wore a hat with the brim cut in half. Throughout the 1930s, Jones performed in Texas, Louisiana, and Mexico, alongside such artists as T. Texas Tyler and Jimmie Rodgers.

George “Little Hat” Jones eventually settled in Naples, Texas, where he lived until his death in 1981.

Next time on This Week in Texas Music History, we’ll celebrate Christmas in June.
