Sailor Poon “Blame The Patriarchy” (NSFW)

Car got towed? Blame the patriarchy. Toilet overflowed? Blame the patriarchy. Swollen lymph node? Blame the patriarchy!

The best source of comedy are the jokes riddled with underlying truths. Austin punk band Sailor Poon find a sweet spot between social critique and satirical gold. The group embodies the tongue in cheek humor of a young Kathleen Hanna (a solid 2000 Le Tigre, or 1993 Bikini Kill) and the conviction of Tobi Vail. These women completely destroy the archetype of Austin punk. Utterly outrageous and wonderfully crude, Sailor Poon puts on one of the most worthwhile live shows in town. It’ll make you laugh, it’ll make you scream – it might even make you a little uncomfortable; that’s the point.

New song “Blame the Patriarchy,” filmed in male adult boutique Tapelenders, is as amusing as it is catchy. The contrast of Billie’s deep vocals and Shea’s high howls embody and ridicule 21st century patriarchal standards. In the purest form of punk rock, these ladies just don’t give a damn.

Tour for Sailor Poon starts tomorrow! Catch them at their tour kickoff party tonight at Hotel Vegas and at their welcome home Chilli Cookoff party on September 4th.
