Studio 1A Best of August 2014

Summer brings the heat, and with it music festivals to forget about the hot Texas summer sun. KUTX gives you the best from Studio 1A.

!!! (chk chk chk) “One Boy/One Girl”

California’s slick disco loving, !!!, brought the dance party to KUTX’s studio 1A. Last year’s Thr!!!er continued the band’s electro-punk tradition. While their band name may not make a strong search term, (such as Wavves or Chvrches) !!! (chk chk chk) has no problem making waves on stage.

The Both “Volunteers of America”

Aimee Mann and Ted Leo make up The Both, both of whom can boast quite the musical resume. Mann’s start came early in the Boston based 80s band Til Tuesday with Leo’s origins in the punk realm of Citizens Arrest.

Landlady“Girl”

Brooklyn based Landlady toured the U.S. with their first release, “Upright Behavior” which shows off their driving rhythms, post-punk tendencies, and sometimes-atmospheric West African nods.

Ruby Jane“Dancing with Disaster”

This early starter saw an Austin City Limits stage before she could even get into an 18+ show. Age won’t hold her back, having performed Tom Waits re-imagined classics to a full room at the Empire Control Room last month. We’ll be waiting to see what’s next for Ruby Jane.

Sylvan Esso“Coffee”

Sylvan Esso works on bright colloquial lyrics on top a more sophisticated songwriting base. This cocktail of pop, jazz, and electronic sounds expounds upon the group’s early beginnings as Canadian indie pop artist, Feist’s, dreaming and bubbly background singers.

Walker Lukens“Every Night”

Walker Lukens & the Side Arms breaks up his traditional folk background with a looping pedal as his primary instrument. Whether he’s going solo or backed with his band the Side Arms, Luken’s music shows his originality.
