Is this Austin “winter” getting you down? Feeling cooped up in your igloo, bundling up to brave the frigid 58º temperatures? Well fear not, because Hard Proof is here to warm your spirits and bring your booty out of hibernation and on to the dance floor. Sprinting down the trail blazed by Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, Hard Proof has established themselves as a sub-saharan post-funk-punk groove-machine with plenty of bite to back up their bark. If you’re not hip to the Afrobeat scene yet, Hard Proof is a great introduction because they’re undeniably tight. So tight, in fact, that their 2010 eponymous release was recorded straight to tape. That means no going in to fix one little conga hit, no re-recording a single horn line. It’s a sign of incredible musicianship that Hard Proof and it’s members have in spades. Driving horn riffs, ultra-groovy percussion, and thick bass lines make Hard Proof an act not to miss. They came into to Studio 1A to show us some tunes from their new album, which comes out on Friday. Check out the session below!
