Red Young & His Hot Horns 5.11.16

Red Young is generally known around town for his virtuosic Hammond B3 organ playing, but in his latest project, Red Young & His Hot Horns, he trades his organ for a piano to play the blues music he grew up with. Backed up by an alternating collection of trumpets, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, acoustic bass and drums, the group primarily sticks to the blues that preceded the dominion of the electric guitar, playing fresh arrangements of the sound established by Ray Charles, Percy Mayfield, Jimmy Witherspoon, and many others.

Red Young & His Hot Horns just began their residency at Antone’s where you can catch them every Thursday night from 6:30-8:30. This week in Studio 1A Red was joined by Jimmy Shortell on trumpet, David Young on trumpet, Bennet Wood on alto saxophone, “Kaz” Kazanoff on tenor saxophone , Dan Bechdolt baritone saxophone, Nick Clark on bass, and Brannen Temple on drums. Check out the session at the bottom of the page.
