The music of Sam Baker is driven by space, texture and balance. The emphasis isn’t on technically complex writing, but thoughtfully articulated, meditative compositions. Baker, a native Texan, nearly lost his life in a 1986 Peruvian train bombing that severely damaged his ability to hear, sing and play guitar. The following years revealed Baker’s determination to recover the use of his wounded body without losing hope in either himself or the world, a struggle poignantly addressed in his extant albums. Baker, who is likened to fellow Texans Robert Earl Keen and James McMurty, delivers earnest, arresting lyrics in a raspy voice that interplays with his dreamy folk guitar.
