My KUTX: Jason McMaster

In 1980s Austin, Jason McMaster stuck out. He was a headbanger in a largely country and blues town, finding his metal tribe via a fledgling, brand-new record store called Waterloo and imported issues of Kerrang!. With not a whole lot of local options, McMaster helped kick start Austin’s metal scene, first with Watch Tower and later with a murderer’s row of awesome bands (and band names): Dangerous Toys, Broken Teeth, Ignitor, Evil United, and Howling Sycamore. These days, you can find him passing on his singing gifts to a new generation through his mentoring work at the Austin chapter of the School Of Rock.

This week on My KUTX, McMaster celebrates Love Austin Music Month with a guest DJ set built around his many metal memories: first hearing Metallica at Waterloo Records; hanging with British metal titans at their Austin crash pad; sharing bills with local punk heroes; and more. Listen to My KUTX on Saturday, February 16 at 6 p.m. or anytime at the bottom of the page.
