Mary Timony has been a stalwart figure of the underground for nearly three decades. She co-founded early 90’s D.C. indie outfit Autoclave before joining Helium in 1992. She spent the early 00’s releasing somber solo records, joined Sleater-Kinney members Carrie Brownstein and Janet Weiss to form Wild Flag in 2010, and now Timony co-fronts Ex Hex along with Betsy Wright and Laura Harris, a group that specifically splinters from the slower, sadder sounds she spent so many years releasing, and lives to simply rock tf out. Their second release It’s Real sees the group squarely planted in the realm of power pop and arena rock, putting out the new energy Timony had been itching for in the years she took a break from making music. “I wanted to approach it less like a creative diary and more like a craft,” Timony tells host Taylor Wallace during their stop to Studio 1A to chat and play some tunes from the new record. Eat it up below.
