Austin musician Gina Chavez has been re-rooting herself in musical tradition, creating songs that are melodically inviting and personal.
Since the release of her debut album in 2007, Chavez has received four Austin Music Awards, in addition to becoming the Grand Prize Winner of the 2014 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Her music has grown to encompass folk and pop influences alongside Latin rhythms, her graceful vocals weaving in and out of socially conscious lyrics. Her sophomore album Up.Rooted, which garnered great acclaim including from us here at KUTX, is a bi-lingual affair, a folk-pop collection exploring her Latin roots, “a rhythmic exploration of who” she is. Chavez has also established the Niñas Arriba College Scholarship Fund with Jodi Granado, aiming to provide a full college scholarship for those she taught and lived with while working in El Salvador.
You can watch Gina Chavez performing live at the Stateside Theatre on April 11th alongside Mother Falcon, Elizabeth McQueen, and Riders Against the Storm in benefit of the scholarship fund, and you can also stream her music right here on KUTX.
