What do you get when you cross a group of classically trained musicians playing violins and cellos with rock music? Mother Falcon, one of Austin’s most beloved local bands as well as the recipient of numerous well-deserved accolades. Our friends over at NPR have championed Mother Falcon since the release of their debut EP Still Life in 2010, naming them an “Artist to Discover at SXSW 2013”. Shortly afterwards, NPR staff member Bob Boilen included them in his “15 Essential Moments from SXSW 2013” after a string of electrifying SXSW shows. The band also won the “Best None of the Above” award at the Austin Music Awards in 2010, 2011, and 2012. Mother Falcon explores new musical territory, blending rock, jazz and hip hop rhythms with horns and strings. Their instruments range from violins, cellos, and saxophones to piano, accordions, banjos, and bassoons, and their stirring, uplifting songs are truly amazing.
Mother Falcon founder Nick Gregg and his bandmates recently released their sophomore album You Knew, and they stopped by our studio on Thursday, December 19. You can check out their performance right here! You can also catch them when they perform at Central Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 28 for their Winter Concert. Their set will include the world premiere of their collaborative performance of Peter Stopschinki’s re-composition of Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”.
